Medical-hydrogeochemical factors of geological environment in Ukraine

The conceptual grounds of medical geology as a science that studies the mechanism and dynamics of the interaction between human and geological environment and the result of this interaction – the health and life in terms of impact of geological processes have been summarized.

Authors determined main hydrogeological regions of Ukraine, features of geological and  hydro-geological  rocks  sections  and  regional  regularities  of hydrogeological  conditions,  the chemical composition of drinking groundwater and its impact on population health. The problems of groundwater supply in Ukraine and the impact of its consumption on the human health were examined. The impact of chemical composition of drinking and mineral waters on population health were outlined. The features of microelements assimilation and their role for human body have been reviewed.

The monograph overviews endemic diseases in the result of deficiency or excess of chemical el-ements in drinking water. The question of osteoporosis among the Ukrainian population and the role of microelements and vitamin D for disease development have been also considered. The hazards for population health due to the malfunction of local water supply systems were estimated.

Scientific and methodological grounds of medical and geological monitoring in Ukraine were developed. Target readers are physicians, geologists, geographers, environmentalists, scientists, political and public figures and a wide range of readers.
